A message from your hosts and the organising team

Siracusa, Sicily, Italy

Siracusa, located on the southeastern corner of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, was founded in 735 B.C. by a community of Greek settlers coming from Corinth who merged with the local Sicels.

More than any other modern city in Sicily, Siracusa manifests a visible continuity from its ancient Greek past and the isle of Ortigia is reputed as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved historical centres in Sicily.
A stroll along the streets of Ortigia will offer you the opportunity to dive into history, archaeology, architecture and mythology!

Did you know that the Greek goddess Artemis was born here a week before her mother, Leto, gave birth to her twin brother Apollo in Delos? And that Ortigia derives from ortyx, the Greek name of a quail that populated in abundance the area?

But Ortigia is also ideal for savouring Sicilian flavours at one of many of the typical restaurants serving seafood in the historical centre or for meandering along the stalls of the daily street market where fish, cheese, spices, fruit, vegetables and delicious ricotta-made sweets are a feast for the eyes and for the palate!

The organising team is looking forward to welcoming all of you to Siracusa and sharing wonderful experiences... so ensure that you register on time!

Landmarks of Siracusa: Maniace Castle

Strategically positioned on the tip of the Ortigia Island, the Maniace Castle is a square-plan building closed by a mighty perimeter wall with four cylindrical towers at the corners. Named after Giorgio Maniace (George Maniakes), the Byzantine general who reconquered the city from the Arabs in 1038, this impressive medieval citadel was built between 1232 and 1240 under the reign of Frederick II and extensively modified during the subsequent centuries. Today it is one of the most renowned museums of Siracusa.

Even though Siracusa is in Sicily, an island, the city is not difficult to reach! You have different options, and you can choose to go there by train, by boat and by plane!
The nearest airport to Siracusa is Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), a one-hour driving distance.
There are trains and buses from Catania (60-90 minutes journey) as well as a shuttle bus between Siracusa and Catania Fontanarossa Airport which is just a bit more than a one-hour journey.

Eat, Drink & Experience Sicily like a local

Close-up of some arancini (or arancine), with the classical orange balls shape
If you are a veritable foodie or just love treating yourself to homemade specialities, then you should taste the “arancino” or “arancina”, a fried breadcrumbed coated ball of rice, originally shaped like an orange, hence the name, stuffed with vegetables, meat or cheese and served as an appetizer or a healthy snack to eat on the go. A crunchy exterior for a soft and tasty interior…
